Gütersloh road traffic office: one site for the whole district

The Gütersloh district registers every vehicle at a single office, on Herzebrocker Straße in Gütersloh. The directory lists no branches.

For the 13 towns and municipalities of the Gütersloh district, from Rheda-Wiedenbrück and Verl to Versmold and Halle (Westf.), the Federal Motor Transport Authority’s directory lists a single registration office: the district road traffic office, Herzebrocker Str. 140, 33334 Gütersloh, phone 05241-85-1200. The department that issues and exchanges driving licences is there too. Only GT is issued. HW for Halle in Westphalia and WD for Wiedenbrück are listed as phased out: vehicles that carry them keep them, but they are not issued again. The district has many cars per head: 667 per 1,000 residents against 592 nationally, much like the Herford (665) and Minden-Lübbecke (659) districts. In all, 242,741 cars were registered on 1 January 2026, rank 32 of 398. Deregistering costs €15.90 at the counter and €2.10 online, as of October 2026.

For Bielefeld, the Warendorf district or the Paderborn district the search above names their own office. How deregistering and reserving a number fit together is under deregistering a car; phased-out codes are in the plate code list.

Frequently asked questions

Are HW and WD plates still around in the Gütersloh district?

On the road yes, as new plates no. The Federal Motor Transport Authority directory lists HW and WD for the district only as phased out. A vehicle carrying one keeps it while the registration lasts. If you buy a car with HW or WD, ask at the transfer whether it can stay; anyone registering again after deregistration gets GT, because a phased-out code is not issued again.

Do I have to drive from Rheda-Wiedenbrück or Verl to Gütersloh?

For the counter, yes: no branch is listed, and the road traffic office in Gütersloh serves all 13 towns. Many procedures need no trip, though: deregistering, re-registering and registering work online through i-Kfz with an ID card that has the online function. Alternatively, a registration agency with a power of attorney can take the appointment for you.

How many electric cars are registered in the Gütersloh district?

On 1 January 2026 the Federal Motor Transport Authority counted 11,333 fully electric cars and 5,257 plug-in hybrids. That is 4.7 % fully electric, against 4.1 % nationally. Keepers of such vehicles can choose the E plate at registration; the search above shows where that happens in the district.
