Holzminden road traffic office: registration on Rehwiese

The Holzminden district on the Weser is one of the smaller registration districts in Lower Saxony. The road traffic office in the district town handles registration and licences.

The registration authority for Holzminden, Stadtoldendorf, Bodenwerder, Delligsen, Eschershausen and the rest of the district’s 32 municipalities is the road traffic office of the Holzminden district. The Federal Motor Transport Authority’s directory lists one registration office, Rehwiese 35, 37603 Holzminden, phone 05531-707-572, and the licensing office on the same street. No branches appear in the directory. The code issued is HOL; ALF, the code of the former Alfeld district, is listed for Holzminden as phased out. With 45,944 cars on 1 January 2026 the district ranks 355 of 398, but with 701 cars per 1,000 residents it is well above the national 592. Fully electric cars make up 3.0 %, against 4.1 % nationally, rank 314 of 398. Fees are the federal ones: €30.00 for a new registration in person, as of October 2026.

Frequently asked questions

What does ALF mean in the directory for the Holzminden district?

ALF is the code of the former Alfeld (Leine) district. The Federal Motor Transport Authority directory lists it for Holzminden as phased out: vehicles with ALF keep it while their registration lasts, and new registrations in the district all get HOL. The Hildesheim district, to which Alfeld belongs today, is different: there ALF is a current code and is still issued.

I am moving from Höxter to Holzminden: what does re-registering cost?

Höxter is in North Rhine-Westphalia with its own office, so it is a re-registration to another district. Keeping the HX plate it costs €23.60 in person and €9.90 online, with a new HOL plate €27.10 plus plates. The federal state makes no difference to the fee.

How many cars are registered in the Holzminden district?

On 1 January 2026 the Federal Motor Transport Authority counted 45,944 cars and 57,235 motor vehicles in all, including 4,633 motorcycles. Diesel cars made up 27.6 %, against 27.0 % nationally. The table below sets the figures next to those for Germany as a whole.
